Sprig Cloche Now Available To Purchase

My new cloche design inspired by the Sprig pullover from Botanical Knits 2 is now available for purchase!

The Sprig Cloche is a face-framing hat design with a sprig of foliage gracefully wrapping around the asymmetrical brim. The brim is first knit flat, then stitched together at the ends. Stitches are picked up along one side and knit up in the round to create the body of the hat. It is a fun pattern with interesting construction, and an elegant result!

This is the second time I have had the privilege of working with The Fibre Co. Acadia yarn. What a wonderful, luxurious yarn to knit with.

Here is the pattern information for those of you who are interested in knitting up a Sprig Cloche of your very own!

Playful Stripes For Grown Ups

What seems like ages ago now I designed my first little sweater for children, Playful Stripes.

Over the years, I have so enjoyed seeing other knitters make their own versions with all sorts of different color combinations for their little ones. It is definitely a fun knit. The stripes are so addicting! The yoke offers a perfect opportunity to not only play with color but to use up odd little scraps of yarn lying around.

I have gotten so many requests for an adult version, so in 2011 I began working on one.
Only... I was pregnant and up to my eyeballs in knitting for my first book, Coastal Knits... so with little time to focus on the design, the resulting sweater did not turn out as expected. In fact it was an epic fail. The proportions were terrible and the colors I chose were kind of... disgusting once put together.

I was so discouraged by this that I didn't feel motivated to try again until now... A whole three years later.
With much more experience under my belt, I feel more confident and am finally happy with the result! I would like to introduce the new improved Playful Stripes sweater for women in Quince and Co. Owl yarn.

Pattern coming this Fall!

From Mama, With Love E-book Review

I am so happy to be part of the blog tour for the adorable new e-book, From Mama, With Love, a collection of 15 sweet little knits designed by Connie Chang Chinchio, Tanis Gray, Margaux Hufnagel, Melissa LaBarre and Kate Gagnon Osborn.

Each of these incredibly talented designers are also mothers of small children and love to create adorable knits for their little ones. They have all come together to produce this e-book, each contributing 3 patterns each with their own children as models. As a knitwear designer and mother of two children myself, I just love this idea of moms getting together to collaborate on a project like this!

You can view all of the projects in the e-book HERE.

I find myself especially taken with the Sid Scrappy Hat designed by Melissa LaBarre.
Isn't this just so adorable?

Take a look at From Mama, With Love and help support these talented, hard-working moms.
Good job ladies!

Sprig Cloche

I just received the photos of my new hat design, Sprig Cloche, from the beautiful Julie Crawford of knittedbliss.com. This hat pattern will be included for free with pre-orders of Botanical Knits 2 on our website. I will also release the Sprig Cloche pattern for sale in July.

I'm awfully excited about this little hat.

After the popularity of the Oak Trail cloche pattern from Botanical Knits, I wanted to try and create the cloche style hat shape once more. This time I experimented with increasing, decreasing and short rows to create an asymmetrical brim, much like the neckband of the Sprig sweater from Botanical Knits 2.

This hat is stylish and can be worn many ways. Julie is wearing it in more of a slouchy style in this photograph, but it can also be worn very low on the forehead. Additionally the "sprig" of foliage can wrap in the other direction around the opposite ear.

I think that you will find this pattern to be another fun and interesting knit. I look forward to releasing it!

Basic Baby Cardigan

When I received this beautiful yarn in the mail, it was love at first sight. I don't normally choose blue, but I am currently so drawn to this dusky gray/blue shade.

What makes this skein of Snow-Capped Yarns Olde Salt Knight yarn extra special is that it is inspired by the colors of and also hand-dyed in coastal Alaska. I am headed there this summer for a knitting retreat, and I dreamed of my upcoming trip to Cordova while knitting with this yarn.

I made up this simple baby cardigan as a sample for my upcoming sweater finishing workshop that I will be teaching this summer. It was so quick to knit and a great project to practice seaming techniques.

I thought I'd post the pattern for free for anyone who is interested in making one for the little one in their life.
It can be made for a baby boy or baby girl and is just the perfect easy knit for a last minute gift.
Embellish it with pockets, appliques, or colorwork for an original look, or keep it clean and classic just the way it is.

Knit The Alphabet

I recently discovered the book, Knit The Alphabet, by Claire Garland and couldn't resist knitting up a quick "N-N-K" out of scraps to display on the shelf of my office.

I've been a big fan of Claire's designs for years now. (Proof HERE and HERE.)
I have always loved her whimsical use of knit stitches to create the most adorable toys and now.. letters!

There are so many fun uses for these knitted letters. They would make such a fun decoration for a kid's room. Can you imagine a name strung up over a bed or small letters hanging from a crib mobile? What about a giant first letter of your child's name as a "pillow" on the bed? If I was "super mommy" I would love to knit the whole alphabet to practice making words with my 2 year old.

They are just so fun to make and play with..

and squish.

Gramps

I recently finished the most adorable little old man sweater for my 2 year old boy.

This pattern is called Gramps and was designed by Tin Can Knits. Not to be confused with the other Gramps Cardigan I made for him before he was born by Kate Oates. :)

I fell in love with a sample of this Gramps sweater during my visit to Monarch Knitting recently and promptly cast on. I guess I just couldn't resist the shawl collar and tiny pockets. And who wouldn't love those knitted elbow patches?

I used Berroco Blackstone Tweed for the body and a lone skein of Madelinetosh Vintage floating around in my stash for the trims. I love the contrasting texture and color in the two yarns.

It is just completely adorable. I love it. And my son... well.... doesn't.

This is the best picture I could get of him in his new sweater.. and there was a lot of bribing involved to even get him into it.

Listen to my next podcast episode for the entire devastating story. :(

Botanical Knits 2 Pattern Preview!
I am so excited to finally share with you the design projects
that I have been working on over the past year.
Introducing...

My new book!

This is a sequel to Botanical Knits published last year. The response to that book was so positive and I just wasn't quite ready to stop designing botanically inspired knits quite yet.

Here is a little peek at the 12 new designs.

This sweater was the first piece I designed for the collection and I think it might be my favorite.
I love the romantic over-sized hood that forms a beautiful shawl collar in the front when worn down. There is also a tree motif on the back. I call it a "secret" tree because it is only visible when the hood is up. This sweater also has A-line shaping, a pretty rounded back hemline and a few little gathers where the skirt meets the bodice.

This beret is a fun and fast project to knit. The lacy stitch pattern is a perfect one for beginning lace knitters because it isn't very complicated. I would consider this design to be the easiest hat in the collection to execute. Unlike the others, you won't have to get out your cable needle for this one! Thicket is worked from the brim up and can easily be finished in only a few evenings.

I love love love the way this shawl turned out. The body of the shawl is basic, but the edging is what makes it truly unique. My goal was to create a leafy edging that was barely holding onto the body of the shawl like spent leaves clinging to branches at the end of the season. With a lot of swatching, I felt like I was finally able to create in knitting what I had envisioned in my mind and I the finished shawl is unusual and whimsical. I'm very happy with this one.

For my Sunlit Autumn cardigan, I wanted to experiment with lace insets. I have often seen this design element used in ready to wear garments and I find it really pretty and feminine.
The lace inset on the back reminds me of a photo used in the first book of an autumn leaf held up to the light with sunshine glowing all around it. I wanted to capture that same idea in the stitch pattern and I think it turned out really nicely.

I really loved the stitch pattern that I designed for the Twigs and Willows cardigan from Botanical Knits and decided to create a smaller version for these cute cropped little mitts. These are a perfect choice for those of you who are interested in trying out this stitch pattern but are not quite ready to commit to an entire sweater project.

Forest Foliage is the first lace shawl I have ever designed and it will go down in history as the most difficult pattern to write up. Just ask my technical editor. She will fill you in. :)
The shawl itself, however, is so pretty. It is made up of solid knit autumn leaves floating in a sea of lace stitches. When I hold the shawl up to the light it reminds me of sunlight streaming in through the leaves of a tree.

The Ivy Trellis Hat was originally released as a special pattern giveaway to everyone who pre-ordered Botanical Knits, and it is now appearing in my new book. This hat is designed to coordinate with the Ivy Trellis Socks and Mittens from Botanical Knits. Between you and me.. I cannot get enough of this stitch pattern. I think it is so beautiful and it translated so well into a hat. I love the embossed texture of the cables and leaves.

On this cardigan, a textured, flourishing vine climbs up the left sweater front, much like a vine on a tree. It's a striking detail that is so fun to knit. I love designs like this with a single plant motif. They are so addicting and go so fast because you can watch the plant grow on your needles as you work. Waist shaping has been incorporated to the sides of this cardigan for a flattering fit.

With this design, I experimented with working a new leaf shape into the stitches. The result is a slouchy hat with subtle fern stitch motifs growing out from the crown as well as the brim. I think that this pattern could definitely be a unisex pattern and sized up for a man.

Verdure was originally available for a limited time as part of the Twisted Yarn Shop Mad About Tosh Club 2013 and is now appearing again in Botanical Knits 2. These mitts feature a fun twisted stitch sprouting plant motif on the back of the hand and only take one skein of Madelinetosh Tosh dk. They work up very quickly!

You may remember my blog post about this design a few months back. The colorway this scarf is made from was especially created just for this project. The gradient colors represent the spring-to-autumn life cycle. The scarf is a long decorative string of leaves that can be wrapped around your neck several times for a cozy colorful scarf.

Now this sweater you have seen before. Sprig was released previously and has become quite popular due to it's unique details and construction. The special thing about this sweater is the asymmetrical neckline that once completed results in a symmetrical sweater. A leafy sprig of foliage wraps around the neckline and sleeve cuffs and I love the way that the little leaves drape over the shoulder when worn. It is a special sweater. Unlike any other sweater pattern, I've seen!

I hope that you all really enjoy these new patterns as much as I did designing them! Do you have a favorite? Let me know in the comments below!

Monarch Knitting

Last weekend I had the pleasure of visiting Monarch Knitting for a book signing and workshop.
A beautiful store in the beautiful coastal town of Pacific Grove.

It isn't often that I am able to do events at local yarn shops, but when I do I always have fun.
This trip was no exception!

I was so happy to see Never Not Knitting books, patterns, and samples prominently displayed around the store.

The owner, Ann, and the rest of the Monarch Knitting staff was incredibly welcoming and wonderful.
And the workshop was so much fun. I met so many amazing and supportive knitters!

I also did some shopping while I was there.. of course.. and these gorgeous buttons had to be bought! They beautiful leafy pattern works perfectly with a sweater sample for the new book.

What an amazing experience! I can't wait to visit again. Thank you Monarch Knitting!

Skeinettes

While I was recently visiting the yarn shop Loop, during my recent visit to Philadelphia, I picked up these adorable tiny skeins of Koigu fingering weight yarn called "skeinettes".

The owner of the shop, Craig, assured me that they are the perfect amount of yardage for a single hexipuff.

And so they were. :)

I am slowly but surely adding to my beloved Beekeepers Quilt. I am so happy to have these "skeinettes" from Philadelphia included in the mix. I so enjoyed my time on the east coast and I know that whenever I see these little puffs in my finished blanket, I will remember that trip.

Into the bag they go with the rest of their friends! :)
